Crook Movie Review: A Good Attempt

Crook Movie Review: A Good Attempt

Story of Crook: Emraan Hashmi continues being bad in Crook, as he has been in many of his films.

Jai Dixit aka Suraj Bhardwaj (Emraan) lives life by his rules; he does not have morals. He believes that since the world is twisted, there is no point in him being sorted out. He moves to Australia to make millions and he opts for the ‘make money by hook or by crook’ But he gets stuck in the Indian-Aussie racial war and falls in love with Neha Sharma, who tries her best to unite the two communities. Heading the Indian group is a guy called Arjun Bajwa who is hot-headed with patriotic fervor. Finally, it is left to Emraan to do unite both the parties and make them see sense in living in coexistence.  Will Mr. Crook turn Mr. Activist?

What is good about Crook:

Director Mohit Suri should be congratulated for coming up with a topical story and narrate it with the required grit and panache. For Emraan Hashmi, it is an easy film to do considering that he has done these kinds of ‘bad boy’ roles ever since he walked in the land of Bollywood. He put his ‘enfant terrible’ act again and comes up with a polished one, yet again.

Mohit Suri does a good job in portraying both sides effectively, he does not make judgments and show both Indian and Australian views as equally racist and confused. As expected in an Emraan film, the music is beautiful specially ‘Tere Bina’ and ‘Challa Babbu Mann’.

What does not work for Crook:

Crook begins on an aimless note and meanders uneasily till it comes to the point. In that aspect, movies like Jannat were better because they had a steady plot that did not deviate. Here the first half of the film is wasted in romantic escapades of Emraan with the Australian night club dancer and the Indian student. The story does pick up post second half. Arjun Bajwa’s character is not developed enough.

Performances in Crook:

Neha Sharma and Arjun Bajwa are okay. Emraan Hashmi is the mainstay of the film and he comes up with another endearing performance.

Conclusion: Passable fare; watch it for its topicality and the lilting music

Rating: ***(Good)
