A certain Mr. Vinod Kumar Kanojia, head of the Hindustan Kanojia organization of Dhobis had filed a case against director Kiran Rao (wife of superstar Aamir Khan) in the Delhi High Court asking for the change in the title of the film, saying that it was offensive to the Dhobi community. However, the Delhi High Court has dismissed the petition stating that ‘Dhobi Ghat’ is a geographical description of a place and is not distasteful.
Rejecting the petitioner’s argument, the court termed Mr. Kanojia’s no-grounds petition ‘an abuse of process of law’, and imposed a cost of Rs. 25,000 on him, and directed him to deposit the amount in Blind’s Relief Association.
Shah Rukh Khan had also confronted a problem on similar lines in 2009, when his movie Billu was in controversy when the barber community felt that using the name ‘Billu Barber’ was offensive to their community. Respecting their sentiments, SRK had dropped the title ‘Barber’ from the film.
