The legendary painter M.F.Hussain(95) has passed away in a hospital in London. According to reports, he died of heart attack, in a London hospital. His paintings had made waves and stirred quite a few controversies around the globe.
Hussain’s paintings put India on the world map. However, he came into controversy for his paintings of Hindu deities in an allegedly offensive manner, which had some sects issuing death threats to him. After this, he had gone on a self-imposed exile, shuttling between various cities in the world, mainly Dubai, Qatar and London.
Hussain became well known as a painter in the late 1940s. In 1947, he joined the Progressive Artists’ Group. This was a group of artists who wanted to break from the traditional views of the Bengal School of Art and bring in Indian avant-garde. In 1952, Hussain had his first solo exhibition at Zurich and soon, his work became widely recognized in the US and Europe. In 1955, the painter won the Padma Shree prize by the Govt of India.
M F Hussain was close to Bollywood too. He was so enchanted by Madhuri Dixit that he even made a movie that starred her, known as ‘Ghaja Gamini’. The movie flopped but he did say that he wanted to paint Amrita Rao because she symbolized the traditional Indian look. Quite recently, he had said the same about Vidya Balan.
The Forbes Magazine called M.F. Hussain the ‘Picasso of India’. The way, he had maintained his health, was also an inspiration to many. He had also directed a movie called Ghaja-Gamini, which starred Madhuri Dixit, which did not do well.
