Delhi Belly Movie Review – Cool and Crass

Delhi Belly Movie Review – Cool and Crass

Delhi Belly is scandalous with capital S. Peppered with loads of expletives, the Hindi ones raising more laughs than the English; it is definitely going to push the envelope for a fresh genre of no-holds barred Hinglish speaking crowd.

Story of Delhi Belly:

Tashi(Imran Khan), Arup (Vir Das) and Nitin (Kunal Roy Kapur) are flat-mates and friends who later become partners-in-crime by chance. Tashi, a journalist, is to get married to the beautiful Sonia (Shenaz Treasurywala). Arup works as a graphic designer for an annoying boss while Nitin is a reporter and sting photographer.

The three guys lead a regular life, till they find themselves dragged in crime syndicate. It so happens that Shehnaaz has been asked to deliver a parcel contains diamonds which is switched by a similar parcel which contains stool sample of Nitin, who get a major case of stomach upset after eating road-side chicken tandoori. The trio gets their hands on diamonds and think that they can make good with the money but not before knowing that they are check-mated in their own game.

What works for Delhi Belly:

Delhi Belly is raunchy, cheeky, and blasphemous and the content is the most lurid ever in a Bollywood film. One can put this caper in the same category as Hangover, Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels but this Hindi film is cleverly juxtaposed to fit seamlessly to give a culture shock to Hindi film audience. In retrospect, I dare say, Delhi Belly is even bolder than the Hollywood films. So for shock value, the movie scores big time.

The screenplay is done deftly, the scene transitions from one to the other deftly. Backed by superior performance and amazing music, this comical thriller speaks language that the youth can connect with, instantly.

The visuals are authentic; Delhi Belly has been filmed at authentic locales. There are no eye candy locales here, but real lower-middle class homes and clammy, thin lanes. Technically, the film is slick and sound.

What does not work for Delhi Belly:

There is an overdose of toilet humor and expletives, agreed that it is an adult movie but some of the content can be even embarrassing to watch along with your fellow adult. The anthem of the youth ‘D K Bose’, ‘Nukkaddwale Disco’ and ‘Sweety Sweety’ merely play in the background for a short-while and ones wishes the eye-candy videos that would have looked good in the film. There is no D.K. Bose in the film; so along, the fact that makers of the film justified ‘D.K.Bose’ as a character of the film is nothing but eyewash.

Performances in the film:

All the performers act brilliantly but the man to watch out for Vijay Raaz. He simply steals the show, he is so attractively restrained that you wait for him to explode and when he does, it is so fantastically entertaining. Imran Khan may be the hero by default but the others Kunal Roy Kapoor and Vir Das are simply superb. Both get ample scope to perform and they manage to tickle their way into the hearts of the audience. Imran Khan by himself, has given his career-best performance. As for the ladies, Shenaz Treasurywala is more than just a voluptuous eye-candy. She has come up with a spirited performance. Poorna Jagannathan has more screen-time and she manages to overshadow the guys whenever she is in the frame. Also do not miss the scorching smooch between her and him. Aamir Khan, however, disappoints at the end with his item number.

Conclusion:

Delhi Belly is one of its kind capers, a trend-setter in Bollywood. However, this movie is not for everyone. It is not for the purists or people who cannot digest abusive language but if you love cuss words flowing free and adult comedy, this is one of the best deals you can go for. But what would happen to the movie, if the abusive language was toned down? Well, then it would be just another film getting an above average rating. Sad but true. The cuss makes all the ruckus, shit happens!

Rating:***(Good)
