Anjaana Anjaani Movie Review: Sad Movie about ‘High’ Hopes

Anjaana Anjaani is an okayish movie that does not show anything new but has its minuscule moments. Siddarth Anand tries to save the day with some beautiful Yash-Chopra like visuals and leverages two of the finest talents in Bollywood in current times- Priyanka Chopra and Ranbir Kapoor

Story of Anjaana Anjaani: Akash(Ranbir Kapoor) and Kiara(Priyanka Chopra) meet on a bridge in Manhattan under sad circumstances. Somewhat like Jab We Met but instead of one character, two characters are heading towards suicide when they bump into each other. Akash is a victim of recession while Kiara’s reason is not shown so quickly. The director wastes a lot of time going in flash-back mode showing a bored Zayed Khan, being the reason for her mighty heart-break. Yep, the Zayed Khan track does not even merit the respect of a spoiler, but that is another story.

Okay, so our boy and girl decide to help each other die; they jump off bridge, try asphyxiation and even slam their car in the hoping of leaving Planet Earth but nothing works. Finally, they decide to spend 20 days together and die before New Year’s Eve. However, in those twenty days, they end up having the sweetest time in their lives. Now, will they end up in a suicide or will they marry each other and live happily ever after?

What is good about Anjaana Anjaani?: The performances of Ranbir Kapoor and the chemistry between him and Priyanka Chopra is infectious. Also the few scenes before interval where they try to commit suicide only to emerge alive and kicking, is humorous. But after that, everything is silly and down-hill. Vishal Shekhar’s music is peppy and sets the mood for the film.

What is not good about Anjaana Anjaani: There is complete lack of logic in this film. It is one thing to be sad with high hopes and there is another thing altogether, to getting ‘high’ like no tomorrow. Ranbir does not look broke anyway and Priyanka too seems loaded with all the booty to spare; endless clubbing, full-on partying, nights at Las Vegas, sailing in the Atlantic , and basically doing a lot of things that go totally out of place with their characters. And just when you thought our Kiera is all diva, she turns out in the end to be the shy, demure Bollywood girls with all her ‘izzat’ and sugar-coated double standards, very much in place. Also the turn-around of Priyanka as the sad and sorted girl is so very ‘Jab We Met’. Oh, we also forgot to tell you that Anjaana Anjaani rips off beautifully from the likes of movies like Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, La Fille Sur Le Pont and The Bucket List, with not even half the magic of what they offered.

Performances in Anjaana Anjaani: There are just three people in this film: a forgettable Zayed Khan, an ‘outa-sight, outa mind’ Priyanka Chopra and the memorable Ranbir Kapoor. Priyanka Chopra tries hard to keep her act going and that is where she falters. She goes full-on with lip-locks and skin show but still the sexiness doesn’t work. Her performance is average, sometimes impressive and sometimes exaggerated. Ranbir Kapoor on the other hand, is brilliant and tries to bring in some sense with his endearing presence. Frankly, speaking; if you can forgive Saawariya, ‘Anjaana Anjaani’ is Ranbir’s worst film to date, even though he is good.

Conclusion: Watch it only if you cannot do without Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra
