Story of Hissss:
A lonely, sad ‘naagin’ (Mallika Sherawat) ventures into the city looking for her ‘naag’ who has been taken away by an American hunter who wants to use the ‘naagmani’ to cure his cancer. En route, this naagin(serpent) takes human female form (Mallika Sherawat) to seek revenge and rescue her love. On the way, she teaches a few lessons to evil-doers and helps exploited women. Chasing the trail left by this mysterious serpent is Irrfan Khan who seems to be confused between folklore and science. He is married to Divya Dutta and is often at the receiving end of his delusional mother-in-law, Laxmibai (the only entertaining part in the film). Vikram Gupta and his forensic team is assigned to investigate a string of bizarre and gory murders in the city which locals believe, is the handiwork of the ‘ichaadhaari naagin’ as she will stop at nothing.
What works for Hissss:
A nude Mallika Sherawat! She moves around the film most of the time, in her birthday suit.
What does not work for Hissss:
Apart from the visual element of Malilka Sherawat, there is nothing much to interest in the film. The content is zero, the film is handled very tackily, and you can mistake it for a B-grade film. Jennifer Lynch who seems to be interested in the Indian obsession for the snakes, has given her take on it and the result is for all of us to see – lackluster and lifeless. A movie like this demanded some very good special effects and the ones that are shown are disappointing to say the least.
Performances in Hissss:
The performance department is another dampener on Hissss. Mallika’s performance does not hold much water; the rest of the cast is terrible except for Irrfan Khan who manages to get the confused expression evocatively.
Conclusion:
When it comes to Naagin, only Sridevi is a go-to lady. Sorry, hun!
