Khichdi Movie Review: A Fun-some Entertainer

The iconic comedy series of Indian TV, Khichdi is the first one to grow into a full-fledged Bollywood movie. In the West, TV series like Sex and The City and Desperate Housewives have easily been adapted to big screen, but in Bollywood; Khichdi is definitely the trendsetter.

Khichdi may not be a slapstick laughaton but it definitely makes it worthwhile to spend 2 hours of your life in the theater. Hansa (Supriya Pathak)’s brother Himanshu(J.D.Matheija) has a silly ambition, he wants to experience a legendary love story. Parminder [Kirti Kulhari], Himanshu’s neighbour, falls in love with him and they get engaged.  One day prior to his wedding, Himanshu realizes that there was nothing extraordinary about his love story and the marriage will make things mundane. He feels that there has been no conflict, no drama, no climax, no resistance, nothing. So the dumb family decides to make things dramatic. They decide they would necessarily put obstacles in their marriage so that Himanshu’s love story lives to its legendary status.

What is good about Khichdi:

There is never a dull moment here; even tragic moments are filled with huge doses of humor.  When there is a death in the family, there is a parody of ‘Beedi Jalaile’ and ‘Bheege Honth Tere’ being played for the grief-stricken family. Every actor compliments each other well, so much that you just cannot afford to see even one family member go out of the screen. The courtroom sequence in the climax is a show-stealer for sure.

What does not work for Khichdi: The love story lacks finesse; the crime angle does not hold much interest. In short, whenever writer-director Aatish Kapadia tries something that is not his forte, even for minutes, it falls flat. But thankfully, there are lots of funny lines that you can take back with you, even after you have exited the theaters.

Performances in Khichdi:
Every actor is brilliant in khichdi. Anang Desai is excellent, Supriya Pathak brilliant; Rajeev Mehta is definitely applause-worthy, as expected. J.D. brings in maximum laughs, Kirti Kulhari is beautiful and spunky, Girish and Keith are good, Kesar Majethia and Markand Soni are adorable while Nimisha Vakharia is outstanding. Farah Khan,  Paresh Ganatra and Deven Bhojani render very good support in cameo appearances.

Conclusion: Overall, Khichidi-The Movie is one big joy-ride that is funny and entertaining. Forget the logic, enjoy the fun.
