Action Replayy Movie Review: Good Treatment, Poor Lines

Action Replayy Movie Review: Good Treatment, Poor Lines

Action Replayy is a copy of a subplot Robert Zememkis’ 1985 film, ‘Back To The Future’, which had Michael J. Fox, as teenager going back into time. In this one, we have young Young Bunty (Aditya Roy Kapoor) who is not interested in marrying his sweetheart because he has seen the way his dad Kishen (Akshay Kumar) and mom Mala (Aishwarya Rai) have been at loggerheads. He gets to travel back in time, in the 70s make changes in his parents’ story. He wants to change his silly look dad into a charmer and his tomboy mom into an epitome of feminine beauty. He is successful in making changes in the past but he comes across a lot of obstacles in doing that.

Plus points of Action Replayy:

Vipul Shah has captured the 70s culture in the most vibrant way possible. Though, not a patch of any of his earlier works, Action Replayy is still a good watch. The lead performances raise the bar of the film, which has sloppy writing. To be precise, the movie is directed well, cinematographed well and acted well but there is one crucial element missing.

What does not work for Action Replayy:

The screenplay goes for a toss. Aatish Kapadia, Suresh Nair and Ritesh Shah mar the film with sloppy, unimaginative lines. The humor is not funny at all, and the actors cannot do much even with their timing if the lines do not elicit laughs. Apart from Akshay Kumar and Aishwarya’s story, every other subplot just does not hold water, be it that of Om Puri and Kiron Kher, Aditya Kapoor and Neha Dhupia or Rann Vijay’s negative character. Though the second hour has pace, the first hour grates and makes you feel lost.

Performances in Action Replayy:

Though one can applaud Akshay Kumar’s act of playing the buffoon and simpleton again, it is a bit too much now. Having said that, he has performed brilliantly and one must also congratulate him for not fearing to do roles that make him look ugly or loser; when in fact, he is one of the best looking men in the industry. But then, too much of a good thing is also not good and since most of the films for the past two years, had him in similar roles, the impact is saturated. Aishwarya Rai, a veteran by now, does a very good job. She continues to look beautiful and makes you believe that though other actresses can be beautiful and gorgeous, only Ash can cast a spell on the audience with her presence. The other actors do their bit well but Rann Vijay disappoints, perhaps due to the scope of his character.

Conclusion: This is passable stuff, you can watch it only if you dig time travel, Akshay and Ash.
