Break Ke Baad suffers from complete lack of originality. A broadminded mother, who has had her share of broken relationships, still has her sense of humor and strength of character intact; she is more of a buddy to her friend. Wait, haven’t you seen something of this sort before, in an Imran Khan movie? Yes, you have..in Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na. You will see this and tons of more similarities and clichéd stuff in Kunal Kohli’s Break Ke Baad.
Story of Break Ke Baad:
Abhay (Imran Khan) and Aaliyah (Deepika Padukone) are childhood buddies turned lovers, who have been with each other, even since they learnt ABCD and watched Mr. India. They grow up into people of different personalities, while Imran has to figure out what to do with his life, Deepika is ambitious and clear about the fact that she wants to go abroad for a degree in acting and mass communication. She goes to Australia, and finds herself a rented home where a young couple of Indian origin stays. An insecure Imran comes to Australia; he stays as Deepika’s neighbor much to her chagrin. There are arguments between them again and finally, they decide to give each other a break. The boy goes his way, misses his girl throughout but makes it big. The girl realizes her folly and comes back to his life, on bended knees to propose to him. End of the so-so saga.
What works for Break ke Baad:
The choreography is decent and Deepika Padukone comes up with another fine performance.
What does not work for Break Ke Baad:
1. Have u watched any of these…Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, I Hate Luv Storys, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Hum Tum, Kal Ho Na Ho, Salaam Namaste or Love Aaj Kal? Then, you will definitely get a déjà-vu feeling watching this bore of a film.
2. The writing is insipid, the screenplay (Renuka Kunzru and Danish Aslam) lacks enthusiasm, and ‘Break ke Baad’ ie; after interval, the film goes downhill with nothing to look forward to. So many scenes are clumsily borrowed from other films, for instance, Imran’s idea of opening an Indian stall (Kal Ho Na Ho) and Deepika’s idea of giving the relationship a break (Love Aaj Kal)
3. The music is below average. Vishal Shekhar who are usually reliable for these sort of films, disappoint. There is no one winning track that should make the movie memorable
4. Almost all the scenes are amateurishly shot, the comedy doesn’t humor you and the romance does not move you.
Performances in Break Ke Baad:
Imran Khan is okay, he is getting respetative; may be his choice of the same kind of films has a lot to do with this. Deepika Padukone is sincere, but with a film that does not give her scope to do different, her choice of film is also circumspect. Sharmila Tagore and Shahana Goswami are wasted, Yudhishtir is irritating and Navin Nischol, well; you feel sorry for him. Lilette Dubey is the only one who is in fine form.
Conclusion: Avoid this film, it is better to spend your weekend elsewhere.
