If Raktha Charitra was hard-hitting, Raktha Charitra 2 is bloody gore. Every ten minutes, you see brutal insanity, people getting bashed and punched, necks beings slashed, bullets being pumped and bloody trails left at any given moment. But guess, what it still entertains in its weird sort of way.
Story :
Raktha Charitra and its sequel, both are the better films directed by the maverick Ram Gopal Varma. The sequel that we are talking about, begins with a little flash of the first film, which captures the rise of Pratap Ravi (Vivek Oberoi) and how he avenges the death of his father and brother, to become the second-in-command to actor turned politician Sivaraj (Shatrugan Sinha)
However, as they say; as you sow, so shall you reap. Pratap Ravi is close to reigning as a minister, when Surya(Suriya), the son of son of Narasimha Reddy (Kitty), whom Pratap had killed, emerges. His intent is to destroy the one who killed his family. Tagged along this revenge saga, is Surya’s wife Bhavani (Priyamani) and his child, so he accepts DCP Mohan Prasad’s (Sudeep) offer to surrender. By now, the war has just begun.
What works for Raktha Charitra:
The clash of titans, so to say, Vivek Oberoi and Suriya makes for interesting views. If you are a fan of any of the actors, you may even want to watch repeats of Raktha Charitra 2. The fight scenes and the performances of both the actors are sure to keep you rooted to the seat.
What does not work for Raktha Charitra:
What will send you squirming is Ram Gopal Varma’s casual treatment of the story. He is so obsessed with both the men that he just survives on close-up shots and strange 360 degree turns. There is not much story here, no twists, and no turns; just primal fight to finish. Too much action and bangs can also irritate, which is evident here. The dialogues are staid, repeated so much that you feel like shouting back and Dharam-Sandeep’s music is headbanging noise.
Performances in Raktha Charitra 2:
Vivek Oberoi and Suriya can really act, and they come up with astounding performances. Priyamani and Radhika Apte impress as well, while Sudeep is given a raw deal, hardly much to do for a talented actor like him
Conclusion:
Raktha Charitra 2 could have been made more sensibly, but it just ends up as as a fag end of the the first one.
