Tees Maar Khan Movie Review : Farce Undone

In Farah Khan’s latest farce, an official remake of Peter Seller’s “After the Fox”, notorious conman Tabrez Mirza Khan aka Tees Maar Khan (Akshay Kumar) is hired to steal valuable antiques from a moving train. He, with the help of his sidekicks, poses as a film director from Hollywood (Manoj “Day” Ramalan) and signs the superstar Aatish Kapoor (Akshaye Khanna). Tees Maar Khan’s aspiring actress and fiance Anya Khan (Katrina Kaif), his mother (Apara Mehta) and the villagers who are thrilled to have a film crew in their obscure village, join in without any clue of the plan.

I haven’t exactly been a fan of Farah Khan’s cut and paste jobs but am not completely blind to her talents as a director. Her slices of Bollywood have been self-deprecating, sly and deliberately silly. Most Bollywood does not promise cinematic greatness but she has delivered her brand of silliness with unapologetic confidence. Once you get past the loudness and over-the-top acting, her films  – with stylized sets and costumes, funny in-jokes, and an almost gleeful lack of logic – simultaneously served as satires as well as love letters to Bollywood.

But Farah Khan’s ‘knowingness’, however refreshing, can’t save a film alone.

The farcical elements of her earlier films were anchored by their emotional cores (The father-brother angle in “Main Hoon Na” and the lovers’ trials in “Om Shanti Om”).Here the serious stance of the characters, late in the film, only comes across as forced and irritating.

The script is by Mrs. Khan’s husband Shirish Kunder who is also the Editor, gives background score and even composes the title track! A talented Renaissance man he’s not because all those things suck! His script, especially, is a meandering, unconvincing mess. Complementing this is Farah Khan’s direction which tests viewer’s patience with it’s alarming ineptness.

Despite this, thanks largely to it’s actors, the film manages to build some steam before the intermission. But viewers will be advised not to raise their hopes as things become only worse. The film’s heist elements are totally devoid of suspense, better suited to a more gentle and measured treatment, as in the original and it’s comic elements work only sporadically.

The actors come off surprisingly well. Akshay Kumar, though he does nothing here which he hasn’t, is entertaining. His comic timing is ably supported by his sidekicks (Vijay Maurya,Dharampal and TV Veteran Ali Asghar). Just to lay some speculation at rest, he is also better suited to the role than Shah Rukh Khan.

Akshaye Khanna as an Oscar obsessed superstar who missed getting cast in ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ – a joke on Shahrukh, is in good form. Arya Babbar (Raj Babbar’s “other” son) leaves his mark. One wonders what his career would have been like had it begun with a comedy. For me, Katrina’s act as a dumb aspiring actress is a welcome change from her bland, expressionless acts. Real-life twins Raghu and Rajiv provide some fun moments as Johri Brothers, conjoined twins and antique smugglers. Murli Sharma and Aman Verma top them as gay cops, Chatterjee and Mukherjee. There is also a cameo by Anil Kapoor.

The film truly comes alive during two songs (by Vishal- Shekhar). One, of course, “Shiela ki Jawani”, which could easily be this year’s best item song. The other being “Wallah- Wallah”, featuring Salman Khan, whose presence only reminds one of ‘Dabangg’, a better entertainer.

If you have been a fan of Farah Khan, “Tees Maar Khan” would be a huge disappointment. If you hated her films than you have a perfect opportunity to say, “I never liked her films, anyway”.

The 1/5 was not for your review but for the movie. Who the hell has money in these times to produce bullshit like this.

The editing sucked, and it felt like a quick money maker (if it made any) and a very formulaic corporation-al by-product.
