Uncannily, there were no Swiss Alps and misty blue urbane locales in the most of the successful Bollywood films of 2010. Rustic charm and quaint, village look was the flavor of the season for the year. The biggest hit of 2010, Dabangg was set in a village but rocked even the multiplexes. The other hits that were based in village or had a rural or old town backdrop were Ishqiya, Peepli Live, Raajneeti, Teri Bin Laden, Phas Gaya Re Obama and Udaan. Even the critically acclaimed but commercial flop Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey was rightfully based in the village of Chittagong.
Moves like Band Baaja Baarat and Do Dooni Char, may have been set in Delhi but they also had characters that the middle-class characters could relate to. Another point to be noted is that the success of first—time or relatively new directors and small budget films like Peepli (Live), Udaan, Tere Bin Laden, Phas Gaya Re Obama, Love Sex aur Dhokha and Mirch.
