Shor in the City Movie Review – A Must Watch

Finally, we have a movie that is intelligent for the classes and superbly entertaining for the masses. Shor in the City is not one of those so-called entertainers that make a mockery of our intelligence but an edgy, entertainer that keep you craving for more.

Story of Shor in the City:

On the lines of the ‘Four Lions’ the British comedy in its approach, the film centers on three stories in the midst of noise and grime of the Mumbai city. There is a realistic yet funny gangster backdrop with the thrilling quotient too.

There are three protagonists, Abhay (Sendhil Ramamurthy), Sawan (Sundeep Kishan) and Tilak (Tusshar) in the film. Abhay an NRI who is settled in Mumbai leads a solitary existence till he finds company in the chic, sophisticated woman called Shalmili (Preeti Desai). Sawan is a young, stressed-out cricketer who wants to make it big and is desperate to get into the junior cricket team but comes to realize that his dream is worthless without supplying money to fend it. Tusshar married to one Sapna (Radhika Apte) is a bootlegger and a mastermind who plans to loot a local train with his friends Ramesh (Nikhil Dwivedi), and Mandook (Pitobash Tripathi). How these three people play their game in this city forms the core of the story.

The characters are not connected with each other; they do not even cross paths. The characters do not meet till the end, but when they do there is an attachment that cannot be disregarded.

What works for Shor in the City:

The movie is a good mix of comedy and thrills. It is slick, has raw energy and with an unconventional plot and deft execution, it gives you entertainment in huge doses. Directors Raj Nidimoru and Krishna D.K. can stand and take a bow for their brilliant execution. The direction is complimented with a taut screenplay by Raj Nidimoru, Krishna D.K., Sita Menon and an exciting finale. The penultimate moments do perfect justice to the plot. One of the rare movies that is very good, in both the halves. The cinematography by Tushar Kanti Ray is exceptional and captures Mumbai in its true, stark form while the dialogue rings in your mind, even after you left the theater. Though music does not have much scope, two songs by the composer Sachin-Jigar, ‘Saibo’ and ‘Karma is a Bitch’ stand out; both different but equally infectious.

Performances in Shor in the City:

It is a male dominated movie; but the women look alluring and are therapeutic with their performances. Radhika Apte is a complete natural, Preeti’s screen presence is alluring, Girija too impresses.

The men are brilliant in their parts. Pitobash is just outstanding, Sendhil is effortless while Nikhil shines in the second half, Particularly in the climax. Sundeep is very good in showing his vulnerability. Tusshar Kapoor shows another side of his performance, and we welcome this one which is miles away from his ‘Golmaal’ portrayal. Amit Mistry and Zakir Hussain are also fantastic in their parts.

Conclusion: A movie with hardly any fault, Shor in the City comes close to perfection. Do not expect standard Bollywood fare but it has a distinctive sense of thrill, adventure, drama and understated humor that is sure to make you go for a repeat viewing

Rating: ****1/2 (Almost excellent)
