Saif Ali Khan’s father, Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, the famous cricketer and former Indian captain passed away due to lung infection on 22nd September,2011. He was 70. Pataudi was the youngest captain to lead India in test cricket at 21. He led India in 40 tests despite an impaired vision in the right eyes, which was hurt badly in a car accident.
Mansoor Ali Khan was admitted to Sri Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi in August, following lung infection. In fact, his condition had improved yesterday (21st September, 2011) and it seemed that things would get better. Son Saif Ali Khan had decided that if his condition didn’t improve in the next few days, he would take him to the US for treatment. He is survived by Saif, two daughters Soha and Saba, and wife Sharmila Tagore.
The Indian film fraternity expressed shock at the demise. Big B tweeted; “Sad news…Tiger Pataudi passes away.” Actors Riteish Deshmukh, Boman Irani, Arbaaz Khan expressed their condolences too.
Filmmaker Shekhar Kapoor termed Pataudi as one of the most courageous cricketers in the world. He wrote, “Tiger has left us. One of the most courageous cricketers the world has known, who took on the fastest bowlers in the world after losing one eye. Deepest condolences to Sharmila, Saif, Soha and Saba, Tiger Pataudi will be missed, one of the biggest icons of my generation, why so early?,”
