Rascals Movie Review – Give This One a Miss!

Rascals Movie Review – Give This One a Miss!

David Dhawan, the box office king with the Midas touch in the early 90s faltered big time post 2000. He seems clearly out of touch, and is just not able to get what the audience wants. Dulhan Hum Le Jayenge, Kunwara, Chal Mere Bhai,Yeh Hai Jalwa, Hum Kissise Kum Nahin, Ek Aur Ek Gyarah, Shaadi Number One, Do Knot Disturbs are some of the films that you may not even remember, forget the fact that they flopped badly. Okay, he did have two hits like Maine Pyar Kyun Kiya and Partner but they worked on sheer star power and gimmicks without any content. Back to Rascals, this one is actually way below the league of David’s flop films as well!

Story of Rascals:
This Sanjay Dutt production has him and Ajay Devgn in lead roles, playing the roles of Chetan and Bhagat, the only genuinely funny reference in the film. The whole plot or the lack of it is these two idiots trying to steal from an unsuspecting Anthony Gonsalves (Arjun Rampal) to win the love of a rich heirness Kangna Ranaut in Bangkok. To put it flatly, Rascals is a shoddy mix of Deewana Mastana, Bluffmaster and Jodi No. 1

What works for Rascals:
Are you kidding? May be the lust-oozing figure of Kangna may suffice.

What does not work for Rascals:
Everything, there is no structure in the plot, no motive, no chemistry, no flashes of technical brilliance; and it is not even mildly funny. Every gag falls flat, and unless you are a fan of jokes on poverty, handicap and loud dialogues, you may be just cursing your stars.

David Dhawan’s regulars Kader Khan, Shakti Kapoor and Johnny Lever who managed to take the 90s flicks to a stellar level are replaced by Satish Kaushik and Chunkey Pandey and their pathetic attempts to be funny. Women are reduced to objects of lust, the camera having a field day focusing on the breasts and buttocks of Kangna Ranaut and Lisa Hayden. Sigh!

Performances in Rascals:
Ajay Devgn sadly get a negative marking in his amazingly galloping career of back to back hits. Okay, we excuse him he is effective and does whatever he is capable of. Sanjay Dutt tries to act silly and stupid and the joke is on him rather than what he says. It is genuinely funny seeing Bollywood’s two bad dancers trying to shake their legs to a noisy track. Yes, this is another funny part in the film apart from the names of the characters. The less said about Kangna Ranaut the better, she can give you a headache with her overacting. Lisa Hayden disappoints as well, with her expressionless histrionics.

Conclusion:
Find something better to do and stay away from Rascals
