Band Baaja Baarat has turned out to be the dark horse hit of the year. In fact, it is the fourth biggest Bollywood hit of 2010, just behind Raajneeti and Golmaal 3; the first one being Dabangg though it was released to selected theaters only, it has caught up in big way thanks to word of mouth publicity.
A noteworthy thing is that the movie has not seen even a drop in collection even after the first week. Yash Raj Films have finally struck gold, after a long time; their last big hit being Chak De India in 2007. This Maneesh Sharma movie is galloping well on its way to the third week, after a good second week run. It collected Rs. 10 crores in the first week. Some of the factors that worked for the movie were the bubbly energy, the Delhi lingo and the chemistry between Ranveer Singh and Anushka Sharma.
With the release of Tees Maar Khan and Toonpur Ka Superrhero, and the youthful Isi Life Mein, it remains to be seen if Band Baaja Baarat can sustain its third week. This clearly shows that people repose a lot of trust in romantic movies with a family backdrop as we have seen in films like Jab We Met, Vivaah and Veer Zara.
