Movie Review: I hate Luv Storys – Not So Luvable Either

I Hate Luv Storys is a story that does not offer anything new in terms of content and goes the pure love story way. Karan Johar’s latest offering is aimed directly at teens, early 20 somethings and hopeless romantics. But then even love stories can be interesting, which I Hate Luv Storys isn’t it.

Story of I Hate Luv Storys: In I Hate Luv Storys, Karan Johar indulges in his trade mark self-deprecating humor and gives a movie the opportunity to extract a few laughs at this expense.  Jai(Imran Khan) works for Veer Chopra, a director who is known for making formula super-hits. The 30 something movie director (played by Sameer Soni) is teased for making cheesy romances with romantic movies themed on friendship with lines like ‘Mujhse Dosti Karoge’ and other such corny lines.   The movie that is under production is Pyar Pyar Pyar; Jai who hates Bollywood bubble gum romances  falls in love with Simran, a girl who is all for such types of films.  Simran also has boyfriend named Raj(aptly titled) who gets her flowers everyday but is ‘boring’ and not so ‘fun’ like Jai. By the second half of the film, Jai begins to believe in everything he hated and begins to believe in love. Finally the movie moves towards a conventional ending.

What is good about I Hate Luv Storys:

Imran Khan is the only saving grace in the film. We can hardly see any other film-maker apart from Karan Johar who has the potshots to make fun of his films.

What does not work for I Hate Luv Storys: The movie has so many stereotypes; the script is weak and the characterizations do not come clear.  Though the movie is so very modern, girls today are much more practical, so Simran’s characterization does not gel. Though  I Hate Luv Storys wants to attack those ‘cheesy love stories’ it ends up being just like them, but far worse.

We do not know why the boring person Raj has to be an investment banker, we are informed that he is ‘boring’ but for what? Just because Jai lies to women, and then sleeps with them?  And Raj doesn’t?  Or because he brings red flowers rather than Raj’s white ones? Also Jai, the womanizer of the first few reels is having fun with women who seem to be ‘bimbos’ and ‘air-heads’.   There are so many other clichés, including Raj finally playing cupid in the end.  By the end, you just do not know what is so real or entertaining in the film.

Just to make sure that Jai is driven by a reason to sleep around with women and hate love stories, there is a hurried reason given about his parents’ divorce.  There is also an objectionable line in the film, “I had asked God for a son, but he gave me a daughter who’s crying over the phone.”

Performances in I Hate Luv Storys: Imran Khan does a good job as the confused Jai character. Sonam Kapoor has an alluring screen presence but the role is weak.

To sum up – Watch the film if you live in the world of filmi love
